DeeDee Trotter, winner in 53.08: “In the past here at USA’s I’ve run 51.95 or so, but I’ve already run 52.1, so I was expecting to run 51 again. I think it was very possible when I looked up at the time. I was within striking distance in spite of my little trip out there.â€
On her trip half way through the race - “From the best of my knowledge I was in (lane) 5. I broke really long which is typically my style of running. I won’t break sharp. I’ll take it all the way to the 200-meter mark on my break, which I did. Somewhere within the third stride in hitting that turn I felt somebody’s leg in the back of my foot. I actually thought it was going to stop the entire race at that point, because when I looked up I was in lane 2 or 3 and I’m like, “what the heck just happened?â€
That’s never happened to me before in the history of me running the 400, whether it be collegiate or professional. So when that happened my natural reaction was if I wasn’t on the ground was to keep running. I just took off as fast as I could from that point.â€
